OBSESSION

Obsession

They'll tell you addiction isn’t healthy. The Romans would say nothing in excess. I am here to tell you that is simply not true. Obsession separates the great from the weak.

I’ve seen greatness in my life. I’m not talking about Michael Jordan or Lebron James, either. Those were just guys who were paid millions to play a game. I’m talking about watching my big brother rise from poverty and graduate from Notre Dame. I’m talking about watching a client in her mid 40s come in to the first workout of her life 100 pounds overweight; 2 years later sweating out every one of those 100 pounds, running a half marathon and the Tough Mudder, and beating a collegiate rugby player in a push up contest!

Greatness inspires others. Greatness transcends physical and mental limitations. Greatness does not come from showing one day and working hard, it comes with struggling through adversity with an overwhelming desire to reach your destination, regardless of the obstacles in your way. Some would call it dedication, I call it obsession.

I remember sitting there talking to my brother on his deathbed, telling him that I would live a life that would make him proud. I am now obsessed with it. I set goals that are seemingly insurmountable, and I make them my obsession.

Typically these goals involve clients. I obsess over their training programs. Am I structuring them the right way? Am I using the right words or the right methodology to help them climb their mountains? As they stumble, I stumble. When they fall, we fall. But I am obsessed with picking them back up and helping them continue the battle.

As we head into Veteran’s Day and the Marine Corps Birthday weekend, I am reminded of a different time in my life. A time where real battles were waged and brothers were lost. I remember the obsession that we had: camaraderie and loyalty to one another. I remember our creed and our way of life, and I apply it to my client’s training today.

Obsession can be a good thing!
See you at the next race!
